Pink Breath Of Heaven New Record ‘Colors Make A Sound’

Colors Make A Sound and sound creates colors on the new debut album from Pink Breath Of Heaven. The music is atmospheric shoegaze awash in waves of warm guitars, bass, and the dreamy vocals of Liv Field to hypnotize the listener.

The vocals are the centerpiece of their sound with Liv Field‘s free-flowing melodies and distinctive airy inflection with a rocking rasp. Their new album pushes toward the edgy sounds of early The Brian Jonestown Massacre, My Bloody Valentine and 80s nostalgia with hypnotic psychedelia. The wall of sound has rhythmic accents which come from the guitar’s picking attack and the drums. Big fuzzy bass lines build sustained textures that cement the drive of the songs. The album’s production has rich drones with a velvet warmth where each instrument shines.

Pink Breath of Heaven’s new album, Colors Make A Sound, was released on May 2nd 2025 on Little Cloud Records, available on vinyl and all streaming services. https://littlecloudrecords.com/products/pink-breath-of-heaven-colors-make-a-sound-pre-order

The band is from San Francisco, California playing local gigs over the last several years developing their chemistry as a five piece band. Their live line-up has guitarist Rex John Shelverton with his effect-laden custom-painted Gibson SG guitar, Liv Field provides lead vocals and a vintage Vox hollow body electric guitar which strums out the foundational rhythms for the songs. They have a dedicated tambourine player, a over-driven bass player and a steady drummer. Their inspired performances and consistent demoing have led them to open for touring bands like The Dandy Warhols, LSD and The Search For God, and Alison’s Halo, as well as talented local Bay Area shoegaze bands like Pure Hex and Asteroid No. 4.

The band founders Liv Field and Rex John Shelverton developed the songs over a number of years, releasing demos and singles leading up to the first full-length album titled, Colors Make A Sound. Pow Magazine has been highlighting these singles and videos since day one in our newsletters. The band shows incredible promise with their modern approach to blissed-out psych-rock music. There is a unique vision for the band that goes beyond traditional shoegaze. Flavors of punk, alternative and goth lend a grit and rawness to their songs that is contained in an opalescent atmosphere.

Their first single, ‘Blue Is the Morning‘, is a slow burn that builds to an expansive chorus. The vocals soar and carry while being pushed and driven as Field strikes a fine balance between airy and gritty timbre. In the chorus, the high notes of the vocals build to a dramatic climax that is one of the most memorable moments on the album. ‘Blue Is The Morning‘ is a prime example of their powerful soft to loud dynamics; they use this creative tool to tell their story and bring a rapturous experiential peak to the song. There is a kinship in format to songs like ‘Running Up That Hill‘ by Kate Bush. Both have a steady pulse driving the song while the instruments and vocals cultivate the proper conditions for a big climactic moment.

The guitar on ‘Blue Is The Morning‘ is thoughtfully executed. On the verse it has a large dose of repeated delay echo effects played gently to prevent the long feedback time of the repeats from oscillating out-of-control. On the chorus, the guitar continues with the delay and kicks on more distortion and compression as he chops out melodic lines to harmonize with the vocal theme. The use of time effects and the edge-of-control tension in the guitar creates beautiful tones. The guitar and vocal are the focal points of the music.

Colors Make A Sound has nine songs set forth with a predestined vision to create a complete, flowing collection of songs. The opening song, ‘The Wind Is Calling‘ kicks-off with the most energized psych-rock on the album. With driven guitars, fuzzed out bass lines, stuttering tremolo and vibrato pitch-shifting tones. The undulating instrumentation is accented by the strummed rhythms of the ratty sounding vintage electric guitar. The rhythm guitar has treble forward jangling tone to cut through the mix as a contrast to the warm and gooey sound of the lead effects guitar. The vocals push through to the forefront of the mix reminiscent of Mazzy Star with the airy and captivating quality.

Colors Make A Sound is a strong debut album from the first song to the last. This album can delight fans of a variety of interrelated genres, namely shoegaze, psych-rock, indie, alternative and 80s goth. Field‘s vocals and guitar alongside Shelverton‘s unique guitar style is a winning duo that has demonstrated great skill in songwriting and a creative approach to the execution of the songs. Their vision comes alive with songs like ‘Blue Is The Morning‘, ‘The Wind Is Calling‘, ‘Look Inside‘ and ‘Always‘. These songs shine a spotlight on their depth and talent as musical creatives.

The album reveals itself with repeated listens. At first, the unified walls of sound wash over the listener and the vocal melodies guide us through the clouds and oceans of dreamy sound. The waters and clouds of sound are actually a few individual instruments and upon close examination the best nerdy nuggets of musical inspiration are found.

Pink Breath Of Heaven hits the nail on the head with their debut Colors Make A Sound.
