The Green Door New Release “Dead Stock” is a Californian Acid Western

The Green Door‘s new album, Dead Stock, marches the listener into the depths of a 8mm film of a Californian acid western and it’s a trip you don’t want to miss.

In the foggy sunset of the San Francisco Bay Area comes a new psychedelic sound from The Green Door. The new album Dead Stock, coming June 28th 2025, boasts a surfer on acid psychedelic Western vibe that rips down the highway like Hunter S. Thompson. Their 60s acid garage rock bleeds kaleidoscopic colors with lofi guitars layered in warm FXs with reverb vocals calling out over the vast desert plains. The sound on Dead Stock is acid garage rock surf as if Allah-las, The Black Angels and 13th Floor Elevators all raised a wild cat together and The Green Door is the wild cat.

Dead Stock by The Green Door, released June 28th 2025 with a record release concert on June 28th at Thee Parkside in San Francisco (details below).

Dead Stock is the third full-length album following the 2017 album Wolf In The Fold. Their debut album, The Green Door, was released in 2011. Their style has always focused on psychedelic music with fuzzy guitars in a contemporary garage rock style that values strange, trippy effects and witchcraft vibes. The band is composed of Mike Carnahan on vocals and guitar, Devin Triplett on bass, guitarist Reese Abell, and drummer Vanessa Wolter; they are located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, USA.

Dead Stock is unique in their catalog due to its commitment to the surfer on acid western theme that pervades the album. The music paints desert scenes, the instrumentation builds a visual sonic landscape in the listener’s third eye. Galloping drums have the horses circling while the desperate guitars fuzz and fizzle like film melting and bubbling in the hands of a desperado bandit smoking a cigarette. The bass lines walk in a surf-rock inspired stride, firmly placing this metaphorical desert on the western coast. The music is a perfect backdrop for a gruff-voiced narrator to tell stories of the mysterious deserts beneath the Milky Way night sky.

The live performances from The Green Door have always had a heady vibe and drawn the best of the Bay Area psych-rockers to the venue and the stage. Their record release lineup for June 28th at Thee Parkside in San Francisco will no doubt be a trip.

The Green Door is best known among the artists, musicians and the creatives dwelling in the lands of the Bay Area with its reputation for psychedelia, transformation and questionable tech / AI money generating-machines. Their lo-fi and retro style is an ode to the gold rush history of the place, the sand dunes that were nurtured into the wooded Golden Gate Park and the Californian musical legacy of surf, psych, acid and stoner rock. This form of musical expression is also a response to the hyper-biotechnological integration distorting our perception of the world. It is an expression of the dizzying, shifting and disorienting culture of The Bay with its big promises, high price tags and exuberant freedoms.

The Green Door Dead Stock is a wild acid Western with music made from wood, hides and metal strings with sound amplification driven by glowing tubes and distorting speakers, played by human hands, making music that could only be created by a human being due to its artistic nuance and niche inspirations. Music made in a similar fashion to that of previous generations with analog source inputs proven to provide mental pleasure on stage and on record. The Green Door is 100% human; it’s messy, imperfect, unique, strange and just a little filthy.

The Green Door is true to the original purpose of psychedelic music as a mind-manifesting music that is rebellious, mysterious and counterculture. By nature, these qualities are political without the need to say directly. It’s clear by the sound of the music that Dead Stock is not a dinner with white linens and starched suits. No, here we have a mad tea party with art supplies abound and wild freedom of expression. Psychedelic music thrives in times when societies are seeking change from oppression and this is due to the embrace of free artistic expression in psychedelic music. Free expression in the various arts is seen as a threat by oppressive political forces.

The first single off of Dead Stock was ‘In Your Blood’, released in December 2024 and is the opening track to the album. The swaggering lead guitar line opens the song and takes the listener directly into the album’s world. The vocals reverberate into a vast space with the lyrics, ‘burning in the sun, over the plain’. The backing vocals raise up singing ‘ah ah‘ in a distinctively spaghetti western melody. The two guitars play off each other with a vintage rhythm part, with tremolo warble, and surfy lead lines that would please Dick Dale.

They released the second single ‘Tuco‘ in early 2025. The guitars again keep the vibes flowing with low string runs and garage rock guitar fuzz solos. The vocals have a 60s sound with dark undercurrents, making the music moody and dark. Keeping with the cinematic metaphor this song is the scene where something sinister is about to be discovered or occur. The ominous sound trudges along and the tension is palatable in the instrumentation. The vocals provide a soothing relief from the ominous tension until the lyrics are deciphered, saying, “Your never ever gunna get away.” The sound of being trapped in a situation of no escape and no way out, tension.

The Green Door‘s commitment to a cohesive sound and style for the album Dead Stock pays off. They have transcended the song by song tendencies and created a complete album with a cinematic feel. The songs not only sound great together but explore an emotional arc going from open sounds with natural images to tense dark themes. They have captured something that is distinctively California. The album carries an artistic feeling that values self-expression and creative experimentation. The songs have enjoyable and unique tones and sounds. It sits in the psychedelic rock genre with garage rock as its foundation and embraces experimentation.
