Capturing the sound of the psych folk scene, “Sea of Night” by Wade Easy taps into the roots of the forest and the underworld of the Appalachian Mountains. Recorded in Morgantown, WV, the album is a slow burn, letting the songs settle under the surface cohesively throughout the whole album. The guitar strings are worn, the drone heavy, and entropy fills the air on each track.
“Where the River Sinks” opens with some raga folk tanpura drone. These are the sounds of the dried up river bed. The first song leads up to a more polished, full band song “Dead Moons,” yet still a low-fi rock representing the production of the whole album. We are taken on a journey, allowing ourselves to decay in the dark, with shining guitar riffs glimmering out in the distance to guide our way. Cold analog vocals shine overtop most of the songs.
“Reviver” features old-time radio vocals over drone blues. The slow heartbeat drone and drum of “Sweet Thing” is followed by “Something in the Rye,” a more BJM, Opioid blues inspired moment on the album. “The Bloody Feet of Atomic Beasts” is an acoustic to rock out to, an experimental hard rock track when the fire gets burning at ’its maximum.
“Saturn Slings a Stone” and “Sailor’s Warning” close out the album with more “Drone Guitar Raga” that is featured throughout the album. A very chill listen overall, “Sea of Night” is best listened to with a single candle burning, with lots of space and time on the album to relax inside your head, letting the movements pass like the weather.
