Elf Freedom Double Album Review by Bird of the Phoenix Movement
Elf Freedom | Solstice 2024 Elf Freedom informs us that “all songs are channeled from the Elf Dimension”. So what happens when you spiral into this dimensional rabbit hole? Intro track ‘Treasure Underground’ is like an invitation to plug into the benevolent Borg; if you psychically answer this invitation, where will this mystery trip take you? Vocals weave together the new century essence of Nico with a hypnotic rhythm section and extenda-vibe guitar, surging the echoes of the dreaming amps. Space synth keeps percolating through the mix, encouraging the listener to look up, up, up through the ever-expanding Milky Way. Back on Planet Earth, witness Jimi Hendrix and early era Pink Floyd jamming in a deep forest…

SPLIT MOON | More Clouds More Stars
Los Angles band Split Moon has released a new “dark dream gaze” style album with lush production and a trilogy of music videos to go along with it. The album starts off with a nice little palate cleanser intro, “Speak the Sky.” The record has a few interludes like this providing a break between long conceptual songs, ending with “Everything Ends.” The album starts and ends with these “musical bookends.” The album explodes with the song, “More Clouds,” with accompanying video showing a bird’s eye view of frozen ice landscapes and water. The video reflects the dynamic changes heard in the music, and the simple concept captures the blurred sonic landscape…

Singles Round Up: The Outset, Shadow Show, Girl Tones, The Snares
The Outset- “But I Learned”/”Baker’s Husband” The newest offering from So-Cal’s The Outset features 2 tracks sounding straight out of the mid 60s. “But I Learned” is more straightforward rock n roll- think Yardbirds, Stones, early Who. The production style is perfect for this sound as well. “Baker’s Husband” leans more psych, a more 67/68-ish vibe. I love the jangle guitar, the rawness of the sound, and the more catchy, powerpop type psych going on here. A vintage sound done really well and with loads of style. https://theoutset.bandcamp.com/album/but-i-learned-bakers-husband Shadow Show: “Baba Yaga” w/ “Spy Balloon” Detroit trio Shadow Show continue to make some of the most interesting and complex psych…

Pow Magazine Music Audio Premiere: Dead Visions | Take My Hand
Pow Magazine Music Audio Premiere: I’m excited to share that Dead Visions has just released their new single, “Take My Hand.” This is the second release from their upcoming album, “Myself,” which is set to drop at the end of the year. For those unfamiliar, Dead Visions is an Italian rock band led by the multi-talented Francesco Mandelli, also known as Nongio. While their 2020 debut LP, “A Sea Of Troubles,” had a distinctly garage punk sound, “Take My Hand” showcases a new direction for the band. This melancholic ballad, with its rich arrangements and expansive sound, hints at the more personal and inspired direction of the forthcoming album. “Take…

Kilowatt Bar 3.9.24 – My Dallas Teens, Down Dirty Shake, The Love Dimension
Another Saturday night in San Francisco, and another great psych show. DJ Mr. Robinson spun all vinyl throughout the night, starting out with some chill Ravi Shankar at door time, and building throughout the night through an eclectic mix of classic psych and modern rock music. The projections were provided by White Light Prism, a mix of post-modern collage art and optical art moires throughout all the sets. Each band got their own visual pallet, making each song unique and different looking. Often there were two smaller split screens behind the bands, juxtaposing imagery with flashing strobes of nature visuals, classic 60s psych imagery, surf imagery, and film-grain urban landscapes…
