And Other Delights is the 3rd full length album from The Cool Whips. Though the title was a missed opportunity for the band to cover themselves in cool whip a la Herb Albert & The Tijuana Brass’ iconic album cover, the albums cover does feature a painting of the band done by local Portland artist Simran Narmis. The new album, And Other Delights is a light-hearted and upbeat trip through some of the essential sounds and melodies of early to mid-sixties pop, and it is a lot of fun to listen to. From the songwriting, with its catchy choruses and sugary hooks, to the production which was done in mono…

New Week New Release: 2 New Phenomenal Singles From Hypnotic Bridge Records
Along with the Australian fires, the potential of WW3, and the Coronavirus, January of 2020 brought me a broken tooth which has resulted in a great deal of pain. Luckily, January also brought me 2 new incredible releases from the always groovy Hypnotic Bridge records- the first, from Dutch quintet The Small Breed, and the second, from the Boston psych rockers Magic Shoppe. Both of these singles are truly phenomenal, even when enjoyed through my doped up dental state. Music is truly the best medicine. The Small Breed: “An Elderflower Parliament” b/w “Figures Made Of Sound” Reflecting not the brash waxen beauty of the obsequious tulips of Keukenhof, but the…

New Week, New Release: Dream Wulf’s “All Things Unconsidered” Double EP
Portland’s Dream Wulf, a band which describes themselves as “fiercely psychedelic”, rang in the winter solstice last Friday by dropping their new double EP, All Things Unconsidered. The record contains remixed and remastered classics from their 2017 demo release, along with 4 new songs. “Dream Wulf’s sound is fiercely psychedelic. Powerful female vocals, melting guitar riffs, intricate time signatures, and captivating dark undertones, that leave you guessing in wonder. They create a riff- that flirts between the push and pull of light and dark energy. Creating the constant synergy of a positive message with a dark delivery. Magnetically charged, their live performance are captivating and dreamy, radiating a unified intensity…

New Week, New Release: The Rosalyns “Outta Reach”
The Rosalyns, a supergroup of girls in the garage featuring Anja Stax (The Loons), Lori Sokolowski (Gloomsday), Lety Beers (The Schizophonics), Amy Gore (The Gore-Gore Girls), and Birdy Bardot, who has one of the most perfect “garage rock” vocals I’ve ever heard, seriously. “The Rosalyns first assembled six years ago to pay tribute to the “girls in the garage” sound of the 1960s- trailblazing bands like the Pleasure Seekers, the Liverbirds, The Clingers, the Daughters of Eve, the Ace of Cups, and the Belles- young women who took up guitars, basses and drums to make some rock n roll noise of their own in a field dominated by men. Swimming…

Time to Testify! The Schizophonics’ “People In The Sky” is finally here!
Alright other bands, it’s time to pack it up and go home. The new Schizophonics album People in The Sky is here. I’m joking (mostly) of course, but there’s no doubt that this new slab of wax is 2019’s most raw, rockin release thus far. The second full length release from San Diego’s Schizophonics, People In The Sky starts off at 11 and doesn’t let go until the closes track ends. We’re talking pure, distilled, in your face rock n roll from start to finish. Distortion, fuzz, searing guitar solos, wild screams….it’s all there and it’s glorious. The album opens with “Something’s Got To Give”, a five and half minute…

New Week New Release: Marshmallow Overcoat’s “Wait For Her” b/w “The Marshmallow Theme”
The Marshmallow Overcoat is a band who’s roots go back to the 1980’s Paisley Underground scene, and it’s clear from the first listen of this new 45 RPM single that they’re not new to making this kind of music. Both of these songs have an authentically late 1960’s feel, in the compositional elements of the songwriting as well as the quality of the recording. As the band’s name might suggest, this music brings to mind late 60’s psych-pop such as Strawberry Alarm Clock and the Electric Prunes. Side A, “Wait For Her,” is a delightfully catchy pop tune driven by jangly 12 string guitar and smooth background vocals that sit…
